2019W杯第25試合、ENG 39-10 ARGという結果が残されている。
前回の備忘録で転記したレフリー：ナイジェル・オーウェンスの自伝『The Final Whistle』の一節の続きは次の通り。
( I was enjoying the World Cup and received excellent feedback from my other three group matches.) Italy 48-7 Canada, USA 19-31 Tonga, and England 39-10 Argentina. In that last game I had to send off the Pumas’ second-row Tomas Lavanini early on because of a reckless tackle, when his shoulder made contact with Owen Farrell’s jaw. England, clearly the better team anyway, ran away with the game after this and I could sense one or two of the Argentine players wanted to blame me for what was happening. At the end of the match their captain, Pablo Matera, as well as their ex-skipper and hooker Agustin Creevy, refused to shake my hand, and Matera just gave me an evil glare with his eyes. I think that’s the only time this has happened to me. I felt disappointed because the values of our game are so much better and bigger than that. In that moment Matera certainly made me feel he wasn’t the kind of person you’d want to cross. Yet, the truth is, it was a blatant sending-off offence. Lavanini’s challenge on Farrell was reckless. I took decisive action even though we were early into the game and I received an excellent review from my World Rugby assessors. (p208)
このくだり、違和感を禁じ得ない。なぜ、わざわざ詳細にARG選手の「無作法」を書き込む必要があるのか。本当にあの試合の笛、「excellent」だったのか。「the values of our game」とは一体何なのか… さまざまな疑念が湧いてくる。
『エディー・ジョーンズ わが人生とラグビー』（高橋功一訳）では、この試合、次のように振り返っている。
『アルゼンチン戦は最初から攻め続けたが、前半20分でゲームは急展開を見せた。アルゼンチンの巨漢ロック、トマス・ラバニーニの左肩が、ファレルの左の側頭部を直撃したのだ。ファレルもタックルを予想して少し腰を落としたせいもあったが、ラバニーニの姿勢も高く、レッドカードで退場処分となった。』（p447）
大会前にWRが示した「Dangerous Tackle – Question Trail」6項に「Is there any mitigation as to the tackle and the contact? The framework states the following factors should be considered:」とし、まず「(a) were both players in open space with tackler having either clear line of sight and/or time before contact?」が規定され、「(c) is there clear and obvious evidence that the ball carrier suddenly drops in height?」など6項目の考慮事項が規定されている。
ラバニーニに関する「RWC 2019 DISCIPLINARY DECISION」の「SUMMARY OF PLAYER’S EVIDENCE」の中に次の文章がある。
The Player can then be seen starting outside the previous ruck, in the line with England #3 who was standing in front of England #12. The ball then passes behind England #3 to England #12 who becomes the ball carrier.
The Player, having seen the ball pass behind England #3, adjusts his line to go around England #3 in order to engage England #12. The Player started that he did not have a clear line of sight until England #12 cleared the visual obstruction caused by England #3.
The Player then moved towards England #12 in an attempt to tackle him. The Player submitted that he approached England #12 at a legal height, albeit towards the ball and upper chest. However, in the moments before contact, England #12 stepped off his right foot, effectively stopping his momentum to the right. This, the Player submitted, had the consequence of bringing England #12 back towards the Player but also causing a drop in England #12’s height. As a result, the Player tackled him high.
これを読むと、先に挙げた減刑事項(a)に当たるようにも感じる。さらに、エディー・ジョーンズが「匂わせている」ように、ENG・12が身を沈めた可能性もありそうだ。だとすれば、「レッド」は厳しすぎて「イエロー」が妥当だったかもしれない。幸か不幸か、このコリジョンではHIAに係る脳震盪は起きなかった。
ここに至るまでの試合経過を見てみると、（大文字がENG、小文字がARG）

英語の解説で見返してみると、「P¹」、ENGゴール前でのARGの猛攻をENGが3つＰを犯し・なんとか失点を防ぐ。レフリーはENGキャプテンを呼び「２回のオフサイドと１回のショルダーチャージがあったから注意するように」と警告している。解説者は、（ENG・３番ショルダーチャージに関して「very lucky!」「very very close to a card!」と絶叫している。
また、「p²」、ARG・８番がENG・９番にレイトチャージ⇒ENG選手が飛び掛かり・乱闘になる。レフリーは両チームキャプテンを呼んで警告を与えている。解説者は「ARG・８番はイエローが妥当。これでおあいこだ…」と解説していた。
伏線ではないが、「そこに至るまで」にいろいろなことが起こっていた。見返してみると、両チーム、反応が速く、度重なるノックオンで試合が止まらず・瞬時に攻守が入れ替わっていた。これなんかも、どこか一回でも試合が止まっていたら、まったく違った展開になっていた。
なぜ手練れのARGの二人がノーサイドの直後「無作法」をはたらいたのか？ いろいろな感情が絡み合ってのことだろう。人間らしいなぁ、と感じ入る。
一方、オーウェンス、あの大会を会場で観戦していると、いやというほどコマーシャル映像で見せられたことを思い出す。レフリーが主演する映像ってめずらしい、と感心もした。どうも「お説教臭い」「上から目線」とも感じた（もちろん、コミュニケーション力を感じさせもする）。自伝を読んでいると、実直さも感ずるが、自己正当化とか承認願望とかも感じ取れる。これまた、人間らしい、ということか。

現在、南アフリカで行われているU20W杯、予選プールの結果は次の通り。

（注） （）内の数字は勝点。
予選プール第2節では、IRE（30-10）AUS、FRA（35-14）NZ、ITA（34-26）RSA、GEO（20-0）ARG、と南半球4強が全敗している。RSAはITAに、ARGはGEOに負けているというのは、近未来を暗示しているのだろうか？
予選プール全18試合、すべての試合でカードが出ている。
①カードが出ることは日常茶飯・想定内の事象と化している。
②カードの内訳は、レッド：6、イエロー：25。レッド6のうち、勝者3・引分1・敗者2、イエロー25のうち、勝者11・引分4・敗者10。カードが出されたから負けるわけではない。
③レッドの内、少なくとも2は、TMOバンカーでイエローがレッドに変色した。
これらは、9月からのW杯を占う上で織り込まなければならない事象であろう。
Midolによれば、出場選手中トップレベル（≒日本ではリーグワン）の試合経験があるのは、FRAのべ257試合、ENGのべ55試合、NZのべ35試合、IREのべ21試合とのこと。JPN、もちろん「0」。
