2019 W杯・備忘録 200

〜　敗因　3　〜

 

準決勝：NZ/IRE、決勝：RSA/NZの笛を吹いたバーンズの自伝が出版された。原題はThrowing The Book　副題がThe Strife and Crimes of a RUGBY Referee、題名が刺激的であり、実際、思いのたけがあふれ出ている。どうやら、W杯前に書かれ・後に出版されたようで、今大会の詳細については書かれていない。大会後、引退を決意していたせいもあり、かなり「ホンネ」が書かれていて面白い。その中から、いくつかを引用する。

１．彼本人のレフリー哲学について、次のように書かれている。

 

My most controversial opinion on the law, and the one that often gets chucked back at me, is that attack and defence shouldn’t be treated equally. I believe that attack should be refereed more leniently because most people want to see attacking rugby matches, not boring arm wrestles. I don’t mean that good defence shouldn’t be rewarded, I just mean that if you’ve got any doubt as a referee, give the attack the benefit. (p183)

 

I don’t want to be a policeman, I want to ensure continuity and momentum, and make the game more entertaining. (p254)

 

彼の吹いている試合を見るたびに、彼は「演出家」のようにふるまっていると感じてきた。「うまい」と感ずるシーンもあれば、「あざとい」と感ずることもあった。ともかく、レフリーは「ヒト」であり・感情を持ち・「黒子」に徹することをよしとしない（少なくともバーンズは）・ミスを犯す、という当たり前の事実を踏まえて、よりよきものを追求していくべきなのだろう。

 

２．異様にすら感じたのが、エラスムス（RSAダイレクター）に対する批判。なんと言っても全22章のうち唯一個人名が章名になっている。その第19章Rassieは、2022年秋第1週WAL/NZ戦の笛を吹いたことから書き出されている。この試合でテストマッチを吹くのが100試合目（オーウェンスに次いで二人目の100試合到達者）。この試合はNZが勝利し、ノーサイド後のことが次のように書かれている。

It was a great game of rugby, with New Zealand running in eight tries and winning 55-23, and afterwards I was invited into the All Blacks changing room, where their skipper Sam Whitelock presented me with a gift and said a few kind words. He reminded me that I had refereed him on his Test debut against Ireland in 2010, and while he didn’t mention 2007, I felt the need to. It was nice that I was finally able to laugh about it with a bunch of All Blacks. (p233)

 

（そもそもこの本の序章で、2007W杯準々決勝FRA/NZでスローフォワードを見落としてNZが敗退し、NZでは「フセイン・ビンラディン」と並ぶ三悪人と名指されていたことなどが書きこまれている。）

 

2022秋第2週、FRA/RSA戦の笛を吹いた。その試合以前（＝過去形を使っている）のRSAとの関係について、次のように書いている。

I also had lots of great memories of refereeing the Springboks and good relationships with some of their players. (p234)

 

試合はFRA 30-26 RSAで終わった。いくつかのBig momentsにおけるtight decisionsについて、試合後すぐレフリー団で映像を見返して、問題なし＝ミスなしと確認した。ところが、翌日エラスムスがSNS上でバーンズのミスを指摘し・彼及び彼の家族がSNS上で「殺害予告」まで受ける事態になった。彼のエラスムスに対する憤りが率直に書かれている。

まず、エラスムスが2021にベリーに対してやらかしことを詳細に書いている。

Remarkably, Erasmus had only just returned to matchday activities after a two-month ban for a sixty-two-minutes video he posted during the 2021 Lions tour of South Africa, in which he criticized the performance of Australian ref Nic Berry. As a result, Nic and his family were subjected to terrible abuse from South African fans, and his reputation as a referee was done a lot of harm. It didn’t help that World Rugby took far too long to issue a strong statement defending Nic, because it’s a political organization which also has to worry about what individual rugby unions think. (p236)

 

これに関するバーンズの意見は次のよう。

Officials in any sport expect criticism, it’s part of the job. But people need to understand that rugby is a chaotic game, played at tremendous speed, so referees are going to get things wrong. I got things wrong every single game I referees, and I’ve got no qualms about admitting it. I didn’t mean to, just as Owen Farrell or Harry Kane don’t mean to miss penalty kicks. The pressure gets to them, they get their technique slightly wrong, it’s just what happens. (p236)

 

そして、2022秋の実体験を詳細に書き込んだ上で、次のように記している。

I can’t prove there was any direct connection between Erasmus’s words and the behaviour of South African fans, but you have to be aware as a coach or manager that if you slag off a referee in public, it might have a knock-on effect. And when it’s so calculated, as in they’ve had time to think about what they’re going to say and post on social media, it’s even worse, because that makes it vindictive. They know the referee is going to be pilloried, and that his or her family might be pilloried as well, but they apparently don’t care, which makes it unforgivable. (p240)

ちなみに、今年夏出版されたエラスムスの自伝では、本件についてのエラスムスの真意が書かれている（後日、できれば取り上げたい）。

 

そして、こんなことも書いている。

Having built some great relationships with Springbok players, from refereeing them in internationals or club games, their changing room was now a different environment. Before, it had always been pleasant and collaborative, but now it was frosty, and it felt like some of the senior players no longer trusted me. In fact, I know they didn’t trust me, because one of their wives had posted money emojis under Erasmus’s social media outburst, obviously implying I’d taken a bribe. (p243)

 

さらに、第21章Coachesでは次のように書いている。

Some coaches – Rassie Erasmus being an extreme example – want to win at all costs. If they need to use the media to protect their position, they’ll do that. So if a key decision cost their team three points, they will tell the press they lost because of the ref. But not all of them are like that. (p258)

これについては、後日、考えてみたい。

 

３．IRE主将セクストンについて、次のように書いている。

One reason Sexton is so strident is that he knows his law, so when he’s saying, ‘They can’t do that’, he’s probably right. But Sexton will keep shouting at a referee even after they’ve explained their decision, That’s counter-productive, because it’s not respectful. I always said to players, ‘You speak to me the way you expect me to speak to you.’ And when a player screamed at me, I said ‘I guarantee I won’t scream at you like that, so don’t do it to me.’ (p249)

 

The best captains are those who ask well-timed questions politely and sow seeds of doubt in a referee’s mind, not constantly badger them and cause them to dig their heels in. (p251)

 

なるほど、キャプテンはレフリーに対して、お行儀よく振舞うのが得策だ。

これらの感情が笛にどれだけ影響したか定かではない。すくなくとも影響なしとは言えまい。そういう観点から、Pの数を眺めてみると興味深い。
